Delving into this Globe's Spookiest Woodland: Gnarled Trees, Unidentified Flying Objects and Eerie Tales in Romania's Legendary Region.

"Locals dub this place a mysterious vortex of Transylvania," states a tour guide, the air from his lungs producing wisps of mist in the chilly evening air. "Countless visitors have vanished here, many believe there's a gateway to a different realm." Marius is guiding a visitor on a night walk through frequently labeled as the planet's most ghostly woodland: Hoia-Baciu, a section spanning 640 acres of primeval local woods on the fringes of the Transylvanian city of Cluj-Napoca.

A Long History of the Unexplained

Reports of unusual events here go back a long time – this woodland is titled for a area shepherd who is believed to have disappeared in the far-off times, together with two hundred animals. But Hoia-Baciu came to international attention in 1968, when a military technician known as Emil Barnea photographed what he described as a flying saucer hovering above a round opening in the middle of the forest.

Numerous entered this place and vanished without trace. But don't worry," he adds, turning to the traveler with a smile. "Our excursions have a flawless completion rate."

In the years that followed, Hoia-Baciu has drawn yogis, shamans, ufologists and ghost hunters from worldwide, eager to feel the mysterious powers reported to reverberate through the forest.

Contemporary Dangers

Despite being one of the world's premier pilgrimage sites for paranormal enthusiasts, the grove is at risk. The western districts of Cluj-Napoca – a modern tech hub of over 400,000 residents, described as the innovation center of Eastern Europe – are expanding, and construction companies are pushing for authorization to cut down the woods to build apartment blocks.

Aside from a limited section containing locally rare specific tree species, the grove is lacking legal protection, but the guide believes that the company he co-founded – a dedicated preservation group – will contribute to improving the situation, persuading the government officials to acknowledge the forest's value as a tourist attraction.

Spooky Experiences

As twigs and seasonal debris break and crackle beneath their shoes, Marius recounts some of the local legends and claimed paranormal happenings here.

  • One famous story describes a young child going missing during a family picnic, only to return five years later with complete amnesia of her experience, showing no signs of aging a single day, her attire without the smallest trace of dirt.
  • Regular stories describe mobile phones and photography gear unexpectedly failing on venturing inside.
  • Emotional responses vary from full-blown dread to feelings of joy.
  • Some people state seeing unusual marks on their bodies, hearing ghostly voices through the forest, or sense hands grabbing them, even when certain nobody is nearby.

Research Efforts

Although numerous of the tales may be impossible to confirm, there is much visibly present that is definitely bizarre. Throughout the area are trees whose stems are curved and contorted into bizarre configurations.

Different theories have been proposed to account for the misshapen plants: powerful storms could have altered the growth, or inherently elevated radiation levels in the soil cause their crooked growth.

But scientific investigations have turned up inconclusive results.

The Notorious Meadow

The guide's tours permit guests to participate in a little scientific inquiry of their own. As we approach the meadow in the trees where Barnea took his well-known UFO pictures, he passes his guest an EMF meter which registers EMF readings.

"We're venturing into the most energetic part of the forest," he comments. "See what you can find."

The vegetation immediately cease as the group enters into a flawless round. The single plant life is the short grass beneath our feet; it's obvious that it hasn't been mown, and appears that this strange clearing is wild, not the result of landscaping.

Fact Versus Fiction

Transylvania generally is a place which inspires creativity, where the line is indistinct between reality and legend. In countryside villages faith continues in strigoi ("screamers") – otherworldly, shapeshifting bloodsuckers, who emerge from tombs to haunt regional populations.

Bram Stoker's famous character Dracula is always connected with Transylvania, and Bran Castle – an ancient structure situated on a stone formation in the Transylvanian Alps – is keenly marketed as "the vampire's home".

But even myth-shrouded Transylvania – literally, "the land past the woods" – feels solid and predictable versus this spooky forest, which give the impression of being, for reasons related to radiation, atmospheric or entirely legendary, a center for fantasy projection.

"Within this forest," the guide states, "the line between truth and fantasy is very thin."
