Together Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

We present a dare for long-term couples who enjoy scary movies: Sit down with your loved one and watch Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its streaming debut on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it might appear like standard body horror, but beneath Together lies a profound examination about how we choose to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together is the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for over ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the actors bring a particular energy to their characters, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The narrative starts when the couple move from the big city to the country for professional reasons. A familiar story element, sure, but that’s primarily where the cliches cease. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the two tumble into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence starts to affect the pair. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The complete narrative is a methodically building horror experience, weaving in bits of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and delivers them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is only the two lead actors, and they masterfully render countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is suffering due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and distant from his network of friends. He dreads the notion of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is amplified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision is that he refrains from painting Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

The couple confront the type of challenges that come with any relationship over a long period. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these anxieties of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the allegory never feels overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Conversely, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could act as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale sow anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your other half and utter, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can undertake today.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu at present.
